Ambassadors FC v Rathfriland Swifts
Sat 13th Feb 2010 @ Kernan
Mid Ulster Football League Div 2
After the last couple of weeks matches being called off due to weather AFC were keen to get back into action. Their opponents were the mix bag that is Rathfriland, who although in bottom half of league, can be a dangerous side.
In our pre match team talk the Gaffer told us to make sure we started quickly and on the front foot. Match kicked off to a scrappy start, which continued for most of the first half. Not many chances were being created by either side, until new boy Kyle Matchett started and finished off a slick move to put AFC in front at the break.
Special mention must go to Mr Anderson who managed to take it around the keeper, and then…roll his shot wide of the post, what a DIV!
Unfortunately the 2nd half was more of the same, both teams frequently giving the ball and losing possession. All three subs were used throughout the half. With Cullen, Hobson and Erskin all making way. AFC managed to get a 2nd thru Irwin, which in the end proved to be enough to take all 3 points.
Moment of the match came in the 85th minute when a make shift centre midfielder Managh, seen his moment of glory and as the ball sat up 35 yards from goal the strike was on. Unfortunately for Managh his shot ballooned high and wide towards the corner flag and in the process he managed to injure himself claiming cramp!
Not a great performance, but to get the win when not playing well is a sign of a strong side. AFC are in a good position and well in contention for the title but still a very long way to go, with many tough games coming up.
